A length of an ordinary swimming pool would be an easy task for a swimmer however in a pool filled with honey this task would be virtually impossible due to its high viscosity.Īs briefly mentioned before, temperature and water content of honey will have a significant impact on the viscosity of honey. An example of this difference would be to imagine a swimming pool filled with honey. In general honey has a very high viscosity of 10,000 cps which is 10,000 times more viscous than water however this viscosity is greatly effected by temperature and water content. Viscosity is defined as a fluids resistance to flow and is measured in Centipoise (cps) or Millipascal (mPas). Next I will look into the viscosity of honey. Another comparison is that honey is approximately 42% more dense that water at 4 degrees Celsius. This means that a cubic metre of honey weighs slightly more than a 2012 Scion XB (pictured below). Density is measured in kilograms per metre cubed of which honey has a staggering value of 1420kg/m^3. I will start by discussing the density of honey. The primary purpose of honey is so that bees have something to eat during times when they can not obtain any other food. Nectar is extracted from flowers by bees and then stored in a special stomach known as a crop which has the purpose of changing its chemical composition for long term storage within the hive. The creation of honey starts with a substance produced by flowers called nectar. The second reason why I chose honey (which is arguably much more important than the first!) is because I frequently have honey on toast for breakfast.įig.1 A bee extracting nectar from a flower. In this scenario it is unlikely that the survival of the human race would be threatened however no one would like to live without some of the staple foods that we take for granted in our day to day diet. Without honey there would be no bees (and vice versa) which would be catastrophic for agriculture due to the massive loss of pollination provided by the flying insect. The first reason I consider honey to be an important part of my life is for the very same reason you should consider it to be as well. A fluid that is important in my life for a couple of reasons is honey.
